Ship and Yacht Registration |
|
The British flag offers vessels sailing under it both prestige and practicality. The Red Star Group, working under charter from the Queen, is the body which regulates the use of the British flag. It decides what types and classes of vessels can be registered under the British flag, thereby creating determinable standards and effective quality control.
This gives rise to a number of obvious advantages - insurance companies recognize that if a vessel is registered under the British flag it will be of an acceptable standard and rates are likely to be lower. Charter companies and guests also look for the British flag to ensure the quality of the vessel. The British flag is obtainable in territories other than Great Britain, such as Gibraltar, Guernsey, British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, and Anguilla. For a vessel to qualify to be flagged under the British flag, the owner of the vessel must be either a British subject or a British entity. This allows a non-British subject to use a company which is recognised as being British, to own the vessel and thereby be permitted to register under the British flag. British Virgin Island companies, along with companies in a number of other territories, are recognised as being British for the purposes of flagging a vessel.
